Babyland

*Caution: Post not suitable for all readers*

Tonight ABC aired a special 20/20 titled "Babyland." The topic of the show was the high infant mortality rate in Memphis, Tennessee. Some of the more disturbing shots were those of trenches filled with little pine boxes.

The high number of infant deaths are based on multiple factors. First is the young age and single status of the mothers. Next is the fact that a lot of these pregnant teenagers do not get prenatal care. This is followed by the general consensus that they are uneducated and just "don't know any better."

As I sat through this hour long special I just became more and more outraged. What happened to personal responsibility???? As a unemployed, uneducated, uninsured sexually active female it is your personal responsibility to make sure you DONT get pregnant in the first place. Birth control and birth control education are FREE! If you do get pregnant it is now your responsibility to get on a bus or walk or find a ride to the doctors office. As a pregnant female it is your responsibility to monitor what you put in your mouth...no drugs or alcohol!

The show ended with another shot a pair of government officials placing multiple pine coffins in a shared grave. But there were no mothers. Why were they not there? They admit they are not in school and unemployed... is there not a bus to the cemetery?

Are there not thousands that would jump at the chance to relinquish these girls of their "responsibility". It's not a lack of education, care, etc. It is a disregard for human life.

Glad I missed it.

Sadly, we live in a world of "Me-Firsters" that are only looking out for #1. I'm assuming the girls probably learned the selfishness at home since you didn't mention any of the parents stepping up to help or taking care of the unplanned babies. so, in a way, this is our problem, too. We need to make sure we're teaching the kids around us how to be decent people.
